West Coast Gravel celebrates the explorer in all of us as you make your way to the shores of the Pacific and take on the Siuslaw National Forest's unforgettable backroads for a journey that would make Thor or Freyja proud!

This second day of cycling after the Oregon Coast Gravel Epic sits only 9 miles from Waldport south on the 101 to the fantastic community of Yachats, Oregon.

The event features the Erik the Red loop with 53 miles, or choose the shorter and less graveled Leif Erikson route with 32 miles and less climbing.

Most of the terrain is new to many riders and has a thrilling twist that has seldom seen a bike tire on.

Please note that, like all events at Aid 1 and the course split, you can customize your journey if you have signed up for the Erik the Red loop and ride shorter.

FAQS

Here are answers to some common questions.

  • What Size Tires are recommended?

35 MM and, if wet, 38 MM for increased contact area.

  • Is this ride/race for everyone?

The simple answer is yes if you have training time and can handle some sustained climbing.

  • Safety

    Safety

Traffic and Cars, loose corners, Stop Signs, Dogs, Elk, and other things we can or can't control. Rules of the road at all times from the start to the finish!

This event has a high-traffic 55MPH zone. We suggest a taillight and to always be aware to yield to traffic for your safety and the safety of the local residents.

You are our #1 concern, and with that being said, we have over 12 Ham Radio Operators from the Lincoln County Auxillary Communication Service on course to attempt to break through the hills and revenues of the Siuslaw National Forest.

We have first aid on hand at the finish and on course within an hour. In most cases, we can get to you with a dispatch from Waldport or Yachats area fire who participated in this event.

This event has a high traffic 55MPH zone on Yachats River Rd on your way to Aid 3. We suggest a taillight and to always be aware to yield to traffic for your safety a.nd the safety of the local residents.

None of the course has traffic control, so at all times, you are on your own!

Please remember that the roads may have an official or emergency vehicle on the course, so stay alert to your surroundings and ride safely!

Rules of the road information from Oregon.gov LINK

The usual way a crash goes is:

Riders come into the lap point or aid station and tell race personnel that someone is messed up and is not moving or holding an arm or knee. The next rider says the person is sitting up, followed by the next person saying he/she is on their bike. Then, riders say nothing, saying that the person is OK and comes to the aid station to get a ride out or continues.

Now that's the normal situation, in the case of an accident that appears to be dangerous, please get the rider's plate # to report to official race personnel the on-course and approximate distance to.

Please let us know if you need to seek medical attention beyond a scrape at the finish area, and if you do DNF (Did not Finish), please report your plate number to the scoring officials and do not cross the finish line.

Helmets are required anytime you are on your bike at this event. Please download the route to your GPS or smartphone.
