Here are answers to some common questions about Real West Gravel
Gravel cycling refers to biking on roads that are primarily made of gravel and are situated off the pavement. In Oregon, several roads were initially constructed for logging and commerce purposes, having a sturdy foundation and a layer of gravel on top. Nowadays, these roads are employed for recreational activities on both public and private lands. Therefore, if you wish to explore more, you may want to give gravel cycling a try.
"Anyone who has a passion for connecting with fellow cyclists can participate in our events. However, it is important to note that the sport requires a certain level of physical fitness, and riders need to engage in some pre-season training to ensure they are strong enough to complete the 50-mile shorter loop that we offer for this event and 3-6 hrs of effort."
We do have a cut-off of 1:45 pm for the Long Route Mile 35 or 9.3 MPH
You can do this!.
The latest gravel bikes since 2020 offer both disk brakes and also as newer versions are being offered wider clearance for the fork and chainstays for larger tires. A good hardtail mountain bike works well for those that have that as an option.
38MM Tires with file tread work, 40's or larger would be more comfortable. A few chunky areas exist, but not too many overall.
94% gravel for both loops!
Spoiler alert: we will be planning the event from the heart of Pendleton in 2026 and looking to host a few of you this fall for a pre-ride as we dial in a previous route, combined with incredible facilities to level up in 2026. 50 or 70-mile options on the North Sides well-maintained roads
Super well! 90% of the roads can't be graded due to being on bedrock and moving to the North Side will ensure much better conditions than the Rowdy South side we have been on the past two years
Please consider riding behind the cyclists aa a sweep rider, or taking up another volunteer position.
Remember that if you sign up for a position, you or a friend can sign up for another position for free by emailing after securing your initial volunteer spot. Thank you!
Not for 2024, but we may consider it for 2025.
The short answer is no, as we mark the routes every 5 miles with mile markers on the longest course and offer online tools to use with your Garmin or wahoo device to load the route for navigation. 99% or more stay on track.
Hard Cut for the Long course is 1:00 pm to leave the aid station at mile 32. 10MPH pace!
If you do not make it this time, please let the aid station know and finish line to be re-scored in the short loop. If you would like an early 9:30 am start, please indicate this at packet pickup.
